There was not much give on either side Wednesday night when rival Warriors met, but when it mattered most Kamehameha won the crucial points.
Isaiah Lahea smacked 12 kills with six digs and Avery Enriques added five kills as Kamehameha edged Waiakea 29-27, 27-25 at Koaia Gym in Keaau, taking control of the BIIF Division I boys volleyball race.
Kamehameha remained unbeaten at 10-0 in sweeping the season series from Waiakea (7-2). Kamehameha clinched the top seed at the BIIF tournament and can secure an outright berth at the HHSAA tournament with a victory in either of its two remaining regular season games.
“It has been written many times over about the fact that both teams share the nickname of ‘Warriors’,” Kamehameha assistant Sam Thomas said “In tonight’s match, it was not only a shared name but a shared Warrior mentality that was prevalent throughout.”
Thomas said Kolby Aiona, Tyson Nishimura and Klaysen Morante loomed large for Waiakea, compiling several kills apiece, but Pukana Vincent helped Kamehameha amass six blocks as a team.
Barring a big upset, the teams will meet again April 30 in the BIIF championship match at Konawaena.
Also on Wednesday, Hilo outlasted Kohala in three sets and Kealakehe swept Hawaii Prep.
